Welcome speech by Lord Mayor

Minutes:

The Lord Mayor welcomed to the meeting:

·         Former Councillor and Former Lord Mayor Christine Simm and her guests;

·         Former Councillor and Former Lord Mayor Craig Simmons and his guests;

·         Former Councillor and Former Lord Mayor John Tanner and his guests;

He then put the recommendations to the vote in turn.

50.

Conferral of title of Honorary Alderman of Oxford City Council upon Christine Simm

Proposer Cllr Tidball, seconder Cllr Brown

 

Recommendation: Council is recommended to resolve that:

 

Oxford City Council notes that at its annual meeting on the 19 May 2021 it resolved that a special meeting be convened for the purpose of conferring the title of Honorary Alderman of Oxford City Council upon Christine Simm following her retirement as a member of the Council on 10 May 2021.

 

At this meeting of Oxford City Council convened for the purpose of considering conferral of the honour,

 

we do hereby recognise the eminent services rendered by former Councillor Christine Simm to Oxford City Council as a past Member of the Council for a period of fifteen years and as former Deputy Lord Mayor of Oxford;

 

and by a majority of two-thirds of those present and voting do confer the title of Honorary Alderman of Oxford City Council upon Christine Simm;

 

and note that Christine Simm may thereafter exercise such rights and privileges as the Council may from time to time determine should be granted to Honorary Aldermen, in witness of which the Common Seal of Oxford City Council shall be affixed and dated 29 November 2021.

The recommendation was proposed by Cllr Tidball, seconded by Cllr Brown and approved by all those present and eligible to vote.

Presentation of scrolls, acceptance speeches, and photographs, in the Chamber

The Council will vote on the resolutions above and, if carried by not less than two-thirds of the members voting, the Lord Mayor will present scrolls and badges in recognition of the honour.

John Tanner

 

There will be an opportunity for photographs.

 

 

Minutes:

The Lord Mayor presented Honorary Alderman Christine Simm with a badge and a framed scroll commemorating the conferral of the honour.  Honorary Alderman Christine Simm gave a short speech to Council and took her seat.

Closing speech by Councillor Susan Brown, Leader of the Council

Councillor Susan Brown, Leader of the Council, thanked the new Honorary Aldermen for the hard work and dedication they had given to the Council and to the city of Oxford for a combined period of service of 63 years which had brought about the real and lasting changes to the city.
